The 5th grade beginning band class meets according to the ABCD schedule for each elementary school. Please become familiar with your schools ABCD calendar and mark the appropriate band days. Refer to the Beginning Band Handbook for your school’s band times & meeting days.
Home Practice Time
Formal documenting of home practice times by the beginning band student will begin during the week of October 8. All band students will be required to keep track of their home practice time using practice slips that are to be turned in to me weekly. Blank practice slips are available in the Beginning Band teaching area. My recommendation for home practice time is a minimum of 20 minutes per practice session taking place at least 5 times throughout the week. Students are expected to practice a minimum of 100 minutes per week. Students will write down their home practice times and turn in their practice slips to me on a weekly basis with a parent signature.
Brasswinds (trumpets, trombones, baritones & French horn
All brass players must have a utility towel or rag with them at all times. This is to address various water & oil situations that will occur regularly while playing the instrument.
Oiling Trumpet Valves
The trumpet valves should be oiled at least 2 times a week for the beginning student and perhaps 3 times a week during the winter months when your home heating system can create a dryer environment. Care must be exercised when lifting the trumpet valves up from the casings. In the oiling process the valve piston never needs to come all the way out of the casing. Each valve is designed with holes to allow air to pass through to different pipes throughout the trumpet. It is extremely important that the valve be returned to its proper alignment in the casing after oiling otherwise the holes will not align with the piping thus preventing proper air flow to occur. When lifting up the valve from its casing during the oiling process the valve number appears on the top part of the valve. This number should ALWAYS be facing the mouthpiece end of the trumpet when the valve is returned to its original position.
All beginning band students have received a detailed lesson in class regarding the oiling procedure. Try YouTube for informative tutorials by searching “oiling trumpet valves”. All trumpet students should have an old utility rag with them at all times.
Saxophones & Clarinets
All clarinets & saxophones should have 3 reeds in good condition available at all times. The reed size should be 2.5 (two and a half). Rico or Rico Royal brands are preferred. Purchasing a box of the appropriate reeds is highly recommended.
