As of this writing most of the 8 elementary beginning bands have arrived at our first major benchmark for progress evaluation-exercise #25, "One Step at at Time". Each beginning band member will individually perform this line of music in class while I make on the spot evaluations regarding 13 important instrumental skills that should be demonstrated. After their performance each student will receive a completed Beginning Band Progress Report that must be taken home for their parents to read and acknowledge with a signature. Band students must bring the signed evaluation form back to me at the next band class.
All clarinet & saxophone students should have 3 extra reeds with them at all times. The reed size should be 2.5 for these instruments. Rico or Rico Royal brands are preferred. Oboes students should also have at least 2 extra reeds with them at all times. Oboist should follow the recommendations of their private teacher for reed brands and strength. Anderson Music (Troy 248.680.0010) can deliver these items to all Birmingham schools.
The trumpet valves should be oiled at least 2 times a week for the beginning student and perhaps 3 times a week during the winter months when your home heating system can create a dryer environment. Care must be exercised when lifting the trumpet valves up from the casings. In the oiling process the piston never needs to come all the way out of the casing. Each valve is designed with holes to allow air to pass through to different pipes throughout the trumpet. It is extremely important that the valve be returned to its proper alignment in the casing after oiling otherwise the holes will not align with the piping thus preventing proper air flow to occur. There are valve guides located above the holes in the pistons and each has a small and a larger tab sticking out of the sides. One of these tabs (usually the smaller one) will fit neatly into a grove that runs vertically down the inside of the valve casing. When the tab is fitted into this groove proper alignment is assured allowing proper air flow through the trumpet. All beginning band students have received a detailed lesson in class regarding the oiling procedure. All trumpet students should have an old utility rag with them at all times.
